Martina Navratilova

Although born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1956 she lost her citizenship when she defected to the United States in 1975.  Martina Navratilova has become one of the world's best women tennis players. Billie Jean King has said about Navratilova that in her words, "She's the greatest singles, doubles and mixed doubles player who's ever lived.".

Tennis Career

Navratilova started playing professional tennis in 1975 and finally retired in 2006.  During that career she won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 Grand Slam women's doubles titles. She also reached the finals at Wimbledon 12 times, and won the women's singles title at Wimbledon a record 9 times.
